Service for Comfort & Hope to be Held at SPC Dec. 5, 6;30 PM

“A Service of Comfort and Hope,” sponsored by Southport Stephen Ministry and Pastoral Care programs, is being held for the community at Southport Presbyterian Church (SPC) Thurs., Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m. to support those who are grieving, sad, anxious, lonely; struggling with illness; or experiencing other types of losses this holiday season.

The service will be held in the sanctuary at Southport Presbyterian Church (SPC), 1025 East Moore St., Southport. An informal reception will follow the service, and Care Giving Ministries from SPC, Trinity United Methodist Church, Southport Baptist Church and Saint Peter Lutheran Church will be available for support and comfort.

“This gathering is for anyone having a major loss or difficulty and would like to observe the holiday peacefully and gently,” said SPC Pastor Carrie Evans.  “The holidays are not always happy for everyone. They can be particularly difficult for people who have recently experienced life-changing loss. It can seem nearly impossible to face putting up decorations, doing holiday shopping, or hosting a holiday meal when a loved one is missing, a major setback has happened, or going through a serious health issue.

The special pre-holiday service will include short messages of comfort and hope, soft music, candle lighting, prayers, and time to remember and reflect,” said SPC Stephen Leader Ginny Prunty. “The service, regardless of one’s religious affiliation or no affiliation at all, is appropriate for anyone who might be seeking peace this holiday season in the midst of life’s struggles.”

Stephen Ministry is a confidential lay-caring ministry with Stephen Ministers who provide one-on-one care to those experiencing a crisis, facing a challenge, or going through a tough time. Parish Nurses work closely with their pastors and congregational care programs daily to assure that all needs are being met.  They provide care for one’s body, mind and spirit and minister to members at church, in their homes, hospitals, hospice care and other care facilities.
