SPC & Trinity UMC Sponsor “Caregiving for Those Who Care for Others” May 22

Southport Mental Health Counselor Deborah Shumate, MA, LCMHC, will be doing a presentation for care givers May 22, 11:00 a.m. at Southport Presbyterian Church (SPC).

The event, sponsored by the Stephen Ministry programs at SPC and Trinity United Methodist Church, is open to the public and will be broadcast on Zoom. Information about area support groups will also be presented. Care givers unable to attend in person can request a Zoom link at spc.events@southportpresbyterian.com.

According to Shumate, it often can be difficult to balance caregiving duties with everyday life. “In this presentation I will cover strategies for dealing with stress and feelings of guilt that can often interfere with a caregivers’ ability to care for others while meeting their own needs.”

Stephen Ministers, available at both churches, are lay congregation members highly trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or relocation. They come from all walks of life, but they all share a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.
