Children participating in Smart Start of Brunswick County’s Play and Learn Group, hosted weekly by SPC, were treated to a visit by the Southport Fire Department Dec. 7. The Thursday weekly play group participated in fun activities designed to teach children fire safety, including a story read by a firefighter, a puppet show, a visit from Sparky the dog and a chance to explore a fire truck. Each child “graduated” with a gift bag filled with fire safety materials.
The visit was arranged by SPC member Phyllis Johanson, also a member of Southport Woman’s Club, who suggested that the club support the federation’s reading and safety projects with the fire department’s visit to the Smart Start play group at SPC. The Southport club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) of North Carolina as well as the national GFWC federation.
As a commitment to being a Matthew 25 Church and strengthening the church’s commitment to the local community, SPC announced this year the new Smart Start partnership, including providing meeting space for the weekly Kaleidoscope Play & Learn group. The playgroup is available for families with young children 5 years and under. The free program provides activities for kids to prepare for kindergarten and guidance for parents/caretakers. SPC hosts the program on Thursday mornings. See related photos here.
